Benefit Lunch November 14, 2004 : To Make a Difference

About sixty supporters attended a luncheon benefit hosted by Friends of the John William Education Center (FJWEC) at the Villa Nova E. restaurant in Pelham, New York. The $2600 that was raised paid part of the cost of the shipment of the forty-foot container full of donated goods which is expected to arrive in Ghana on 12 December.

The keynote speaker was Ms. Barbara A. Knaub, who described her travels and assistance in Ghana.

An award of appreciation was given to Mabel Drake.

Computers at John William Montessori School

Three CD burners, a supply of blank CD’s and four computer mice were purchased for John William Montessori School (JWMS) ($224). The Quaker United Nations Office in New York (QUNONY) kindly donated another computer of recent vintage.

The new radio tower on top of the third building allows the school to have continuous Internet access via a radio link.

HIV/Aids Awareness

In June, three HIV / AIDS Education workshops were given to students ages 10 to 14 by Ms. Monica Westin. A separate workshop was organized for the staff and parents.

Building Construction at John William Montessori School

In February, construction of the new radio tower on top of the third building was completed.

Support for the John William Montessori School Community

The forty-foot container of donations shipped in November 2003 arrived at JWMS in May.

Story books for children, toys and clothing were distributed to each classroom. Large cupboards for their storage were built by the JWMS Parent Teacher Association. Several computers and software were added to the computer lab.

In September, That Nothing Be Lost Thrift Store and Antique Shop located in Graymoor, Garrison, New York which supports St. Christopher's Inn and its residents, kindly donated left-over seasonal summer material (clothes, bedding, shoes and children's things) to FJWEC for use at the school.

Some of the things which the school cannot use, such as women's clothes, will be used by Voices of African Mothers for their needy members.

In October, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lisle Fire Company of Lisle, New York donated half a van load of children's toys, clothes, shoes and other materials. Such support is so helpful.

Also in October, Nana-Fosu Randall purchased from Goodwill Industries more than ten children's bicycles to be sent for the school children to play on.

Affordables (Dobbs Ferry), Franciscan Friars of the Atonement (Graymoor), and Scarsdale Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) also generously donated toys, books, clothing and furniture during the year.

Another forty-foot container was filled with the collected donations and shipped in November.

Outreach

After a trial period of five months, it the Board of FJWEC decided that the use of a consultant was not a way we wished to continue using our limited funds.

FJWEC agreed to work together with the Non-Governmental organization Voices of African Mothers (VAM) that was founded in June. JWMS students provided a cultural display of dance and song as entertainment during the launching of VAM at the MPlaza Hotel in Accra, Ghana.

FJWEC took part in the North South Institute Consultation organized by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). FJWEC is referred to on page 21 of their 2004 report as “…yet another US-based NGO is working in Ghana to spread HIV / AIDS awareness to local communities.”
