Friends of John William Education Center (FJWEC) Benefit Dinner Dance June 16
A remarkable storm blew the brand new roof off of the second building at John William Montessori School (JWMS), leaving five classrooms open to the elements. Some machines were damaged and many classroom materials were lost, included thousands of newly printed notebooks.
The Dinner Dance at Christ Church-United Methodist, Park Avenue, New York produced enough funds to pay for the repair of our roof.
Computers at John William Montessori School
In August, Fabkom, Incorporated donated seventy 486 computers ready to be to be networked and in June, Hempstead Long Island School District donated several computers, classroom furniture and books for use JWMS.
At a cost of $4500, these donations were shipped to the school in October. They arrived at the school in April of 2001.
$167 was spent for the JWMS web site. Internet access via a telephone connection was established at the school at a cost of $610. Application was made for a second telephone line for the school. AfricaOnLine is the provider.
Construction at John William Montessori School
The roof of the second building blew off during an unusually bad storm. The $3000 raised at the Benefit Dinner Dance on June 16 was sent to replace the roof of the second building. A further $22,000 was donated to prepare the site for the third building at JWMS and begin its construction.
Conflict resolution training
At JWMS during the summer (August 7 – 24), a team of four Alternatives to Violence (AVP) trainers from the USA, Nigeria, the Netherlands and Togo facilitated a three-week-series of workshops for thirty-one parents, teachers, church leaders and other community people. The workshop format gave them an opportunity to build relationships and develop skills they can use with each other when every day conflicts arise. Stronger parent-teacher-community communication will enhances the students’ education and academic achievements.
These programs were made possible by the generosity of Scarsdale and Adelphi Monthly Meetings, Purchase Quarterly Meeting and Baltimore Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), as well as many individual Friends, and the use of the John William Montessori School facilities.
HIV / AIDS Awareness
Monica Westin, originally from Sweden, is one of our strongest supporters, and served for five years as Chairperson of FJWEC.
A registered nurse wishing to be of service, she is enthusiastic about addressing the spread of AIDS. On May 7, she made a presentation which 150 of our parents attended. She is expanding the AIDS awareness program based at John William Montessori School and has created informative brochures with age appropriate information for use beginning with kindergarten children.
Poems for the Future: Voices of African Children
In May, Monica Westin working with the World Association of Former United Nations Interns and Fellows, Incorporated (WAFUNIF) began a project whose purpose is to increase awareness of John William Montessori School, and the role of the United Nations in helping to build a better world for the young generations.
Poems written by children in the school are to be published with the title: Poems for the Future: Voices of African Children.
It is expected that the book will be published in 2002.
Support for the John William Montessori School Community
Medical care for a staff member and membership in the American Association of Teachers of French was provided at a total cost of $112.
